The dining room had book cases filled with hundreds of books, and some newspapers. There was a small pantry leading off the room, where the plates, dishes, pots and pans were kept. The dining room served as the kitchen as well and so there were a stove and a large sink in it. The dining room was next to the bathroom.
Ronke did not like the bathroom. It was the one thing she hated about staying with her grandparents. The bathroom was dark and had a dank smell. She did not like the bathtub. Part of the porcelain had chipped off the bottom of the tub, the exposed portion was rusty and scary, and she could not bring herself to step on it. Whenever she had to take a bath, her skin crawled, and she almost cried.
Mama blessed the food. For supper, they had boiled, soft white rice, soft, fried yellow-brown ripe plantains, and succulent freshly caught fish stew. Mama was such a wonderful cook and she liked to feed them well! There was no denying that one of the reasons Ronke liked to visit her grandparents was to eat Mamaâs food. She loved Mamaâs buttery oh so delicious shortcake-like biscuits that melted in your mouth and that everyone raved about. Mamaâs favorite meal to cook and eat, however, was rice, plantain and fish, fragrant with ginger, onion and garlic. It was one of Ronkeâs favorite meals as well. The mouth-watering stewed fish and fried plantain aroma filled the dining room, flooding every corner, every nook, every cranny, all the crevices of the room.
It twirled under the table, swirled around the chair legs, floated in the air, and rose to the low ceiling.
Even Papa cooked very nice meals. Ronke liked the omelets that he made for breakfast, with sardines and fried onions. Papa prepared the sardines, which he bought fresh at the market, in a singular way. He also made a special kind of toast that he baked in the oven and stored in tins. She had never anywhere else eaten anything like it! It was so crisp and had a one of a kind flavor. Papaâs sardines and toast were legendary!
Ronke and Bobo had second helpings of dinner. They were full and well-satisfied afterwards, heavy-eyed and ready for Mamaâs soft and welcoming bed. They would be going to church with Mama the following day, so when Mama said that it was time for bed, they did not mind at all; not even Bolaro made a fuss.
